THIS IS WHAT A FEMINIST LOOKS LIKE: GILBERT, GUBAR, AND THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE

On February 28th, the National Book Critics Circle will present their lifetime achievement award to Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar. Their 1979 book, The Madwoman in the Attic, changed the way we think about Victorian literature. And in 1985, they co-edited the indispensable Norton Anthology of Literature by Women, currently in its third edition. Ron Charles at the Washington Post has written a great review of their pioneering work over the years.

We mention this background simply to convey how incredible it is to see these two brilliant women who have contributed so much to feminist thought over the past four decades discussing The Feminine Mystique as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this month. Watch the video.

Zora Neale Hurston, born on this day in 1891, wrote these words in her 1950 essay, What White Publishers Won’t Print. ”For various reasons, the average, struggling, non-morbid Negro is the best-kept secret in America. His revelation to the public is the thing needed to do away with that feeling of difference which inspires fear, and which ever expresses itself in dislike. It is inevitable that this knowledge will destroy many illusions and romantic traditions which America probably likes to have around. But then, we have no record of anybody sinking into a lingering death on finding out that there was no Santa Claus. The old world will take it in its stride. Poetry contributor Katherine Starbuck sent the above photo to us after writing a letter to the editor (also above) in the December 2012 issue. Her caption to the photo reads: “Donald Justice, Jon Anderson (student poet), Kathy Salyer (later Starbuck), James Tate (student poet), Marvin Bell, and unidentified woman at a late spring or early summer 1966 pot roast at the home of Vance Bourjaily outside Iowa City.” Read the entirety of her letter here.

The dress, made of a cotton fabric with mother-of-pearl buttons, is a style known as a wrapper or a house dress, worn by women as everyday clothing for doing chores and other activities inside the house. It was not a particularly unusual or expensive dress for its time. The dress is primarily machine stitched, with supplemental hand-stitching. The maker of the dress is unknown.
